Pazo de Oca is one of the most emblematic palace complexes in Galicia and a major landmark of 17th- and 18th-century aristocratic architecture. Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument and popularly known as the Galician Versailles, the estate clearly reflects the noble society of the Early Modern period, both through the monumentality of its buildings and the carefully conceived design of its gardens. Its significance goes beyond architecture alone and helps to explain the economic, social and cultural power exercised by the Galician aristocracy in the region. The complex is structured around three main elements. First, the church-hermitage, flanked by two towers that are linked to the manor house by a broad Baroque balcony. Second, the palace itself, also in the Baroque style, where a rectangular tower crowned with battlements stands out, decorated with several heraldic coats of arms that testify to the succession of the family lineages who owned the estate. Throughout its history, the pazo belonged to the Suero de Oca, Neira, Gayoso and Camarasa families, until reaching its current owner, the Duke of Segorbe. Today, it is managed by the Fundación Casa Ducal de Medinaceli. Finally, special mention should be made of the gardens, whose layout, dating from the second decade of the 18th century, is a reinterpretation of the French landscape tradition adapted to the Galician setting. They are organized into independent spaces, each with its own identity, where the Baroque play of perspective combines with the constant presence of water, granite and a carefully selected range of plant species. Particularly noteworthy are the geometric hedges, the balustrades, the bridges and, above all, the two large ponds, one of them featuring a singular small island in the shape of a stone-carved boat. A walk through these gardens offers one of the most distinctive and recognizable landscape experiences in Galician aristocratic architecture. Included in the Camellia Route, Pazo de Oca forms part of an itinerary that brings together thousands of varieties of this species in historic gardens, and today it stands as a privileged place from which to discover the landscape and cultural richness of Galicia through one of its most representative aristocratic estates.
