Pazo de Borraxeiros

Pazo da Torre
Category Pazo / Manor house

The Pazo (Galician manor house) de Borraxeiros is one of the most notable civil architectural complexes in the municipality of Agolada. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when it was built using the remains of an earlier medieval fortress that had been destroyed during the Irmandiño Revolts of 1467, a key episode in Galician history in which numerous feudal castles were attacked and ruined by popular uprisings. This circumstance explains the defensive character still preserved in part of the building, particularly one of its towers, which dates back to the medieval fortress.

Architecturally, the manor house has a rectangular ground plan, with two storeys (ground floor and upper floor) and a hipped roof. The complex is flanked by two towers, one of them a direct heir to the original fortress, reinforcing its image as a fortified manor house. The façade is one of its most representative elements, dominated by a Neoclassical doorway, complemented by a Baroque chimney, a symbol of status and noble representation.

The complex is completed by several elements typical of Galician rural manor architecture, including a courtyard of arms, an interior balcony and a chapel, which highlights its dual residential and symbolic function. The Pazo de Borraxeiros thus represents a good example of the evolution of medieval fortresses into noble residences, combining inherited defensive features with architectural forms typical of the 17th century.

Today, the manor stands as an interesting testimony to the aristocratic architecture of inland Galicia and to the history of the noble lineages linked to this territory.
