Ponte Vilariño Bridge

Lugar Ponte Vilariño, 1
Category Historic bridge

The Ponte Vilariño Bridge is one of the historic crossings over the River Arnego, located on the boundary between the Deza and A Ulloa regions in the municipality of Agolada. Its origins date back to the year 814, making it one of the oldest communication infrastructures in the area. Since medieval times, this crossing helped connect the inland territories of Galicia, facilitating the movement of people, livestock and goods along the routes linking Lalín and Agolada, and contributing to the organisation of the rural landscape of both regions.

Over the centuries, the bridge underwent several renovations that altered its original structure in order to adapt it to the needs of each period, while maintaining its function as an essential crossing point over the river. Its location within a well-preserved natural setting along the course of the Arnego enhances the scenic value of the site and helps explain the historical importance of rivers as axes of communication and settlement in Galicia.

In the vicinity of the bridge there are also elements associated with the traditional use of water, such as old water mills and the ruins of a spa, which further enrich the heritage interest of the site. Altogether, Ponte Vilariño stands as a place where history, river landscape and territorial memory come together, offering visitors a direct glimpse into the historic communication routes of inland Galicia.
