A Carixa Recreation Area

Estrada Merza-Fontao, A Carixa
Category Recreation area

Located at the confluence of the Orza and Deza rivers, the A Carixa Recreation Area is one of the most emblematic natural spaces in the municipality of Vila de Cruces. This enclave combines the scenic appeal of the riverbank with a carefully designed infrastructure for enjoyment and relaxation. Its river beach and natural pools offer an ideal environment for swimming in the summer months, while its landscaped paths, shaded areas and picnic spots invite visitors to enjoy direct contact with Galician nature.

The area has a wide range of facilities that reinforce its family-friendly and recreational character: a children's playground, rest areas, exercise equipment for adults, toilets and a café service. One of the most distinctive features of the area is the group of old water mills, now restored, which offer insight into the ethnographic tradition and water culture of the Deza region. This ethnographic complex represents a valuable testimony to the traditional use of natural resources and the way of life linked to the rivers.

A Carixa is also located in a privileged setting, just a few kilometres from the famous Fervenza do Toxa, one of the highest and most spectacular waterfalls in Galicia, and the historic Monastery of Carboeiro, a jewel of Galician Romanesque architecture. This proximity makes the recreation area an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and cultural heritage of Vila de Cruces. Overall, A Carixa represents a space where nature, leisure and history intertwine to offer visitors a complete experience of relaxation and discovery of the Galician rural environment.
