Ulla Viewpoint

Alto do Castro
Category Scenic viewpoint

The Ulla viewpoint is located on Monte do Castro, at an altitude of 279 metres and very close to the provincial boundary, in a privileged setting that opens up wide panoramic views over the valley of the River Ulla. Situated at the foot of the Camino de Santiago, this viewpoint offers an exceptional outlook that includes landscape and symbolic landmarks of great importance, such as Pico Sacro and the winding meanders of the Ulla, creating a place of special natural and cultural interest.

The site is also known by the names Eira dos Mouros and Trocastello, designations that refer to its historical past as a castro settlement. Even today, remains of the ancient defensive walls and the ditch that protected this pre-Roman settlement can still be seen, providing evidence of human occupation of the site since very early times. These remains give the viewpoint notable archaeological value and allow visitors to understand the strategic importance of this natural elevation for controlling the surrounding territory and the river routes. In the surroundings of the viewpoint there is also a hut that reproduces the typology of the ancient castro dwellings, built in 1975 for interpretative and landscape purposes.

From the summit of the hill there is a spectacular view of the Ulla valley, where the Gundián Bridge stands out, an important work of civil engineering integrated into the landscape and equipped with its own viewpoint. The surrounding environment, characterised by forests and river landscapes, allows visitors to contemplate the Paso da Cova, the riverbank, the valley and the lush vegetation that surrounds it, as well as several small villages scattered across the territory. Overall, the Mirador do Ulla presents itself as a privileged location from which to enjoy the landscape, understand the history of ancient settlement and appreciate the relationship between nature and heritage.
