The Fervenzas de Curantes waterfalls form one of the most distinctive natural areas in the municipality of A Estrada. The Curantes River, a tributary of the Liñares River, descends along the slopes of Monte San Sebastián, creating a sequence of waterfalls, pools and small gorges within an area officially recognised for its scenic value. Between Rubín and Cereixo, the riverbed drops significantly in altitude, forming two large waterfalls and several smaller cascades that create a landscape of great beauty, surrounded by a dense riverside forest. Among the best-known waterfalls are Picho do Curantes and Poza de Maimón. The Galician term picho refers to a peak or steep drop and perfectly describes the first waterfall, which descends about five metres before forming the pool below. Further upstream lies the Valiñas waterfall, the highest in the group, with a drop of around ten metres. It can be viewed from above by following a circular hiking route that accompanies the course of the river. Although access to the base of this last waterfall is somewhat more demanding, the rest of the route is accessible and suitable even for families. This small valley was once used as an area for water mills, which harnessed the power of the river as a source of energy. These elements help explain the close historical relationship between the river and the everyday life of the local communities. Along the path visitors can see several traditional mills, witnesses to the former economic activity linked to the river. Today, the Fervenzas de Curantes combine nature, ethnographic heritage and hiking, offering visitors a complete experience that brings together landscape, history and outdoor enjoyment in one of the most attractive corners of inland Galicia.
