Alto da Madanela Viewpoint

A Madanela, Ollares (Santa María)
Category Scenic viewpoint

Alto da Madalena, located in Vila de Cruces, rises 650 metres above sea level and offers one of the most impressive panoramic views of inland Galicia. From its summit, on clear days, it is possible to contemplate views stretching up to 50 kilometres to the north and west, taking in mountains, valleys and forests that showcase the region's natural wealth. This viewpoint is not only notable for its scenic beauty, but also for the feeling of spaciousness and tranquillity it conveys, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and photographers.

The sacred character of Alto da Madalena dates back to the 14th century, when a hermitage dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene was built on its summit, marking the space for spiritual and devotional purposes. In 1493, the last abbot of the Monastery of Carboeiro granted the area of the coto of Pastoriza to the Count of Altamira, highlighting its religious and administrative importance at the time. Although the original chapel no longer stands, the historical presence of the Hermitage of the Virgin of Madalena at the summit continues to sanctify the place and remind us of its medieval past.

Today, Alto da Madalena remains a cultural and festive meeting point thanks to the Madalena rural pilgrimage festival, which is held every July. This popular tradition allows visitors to experience the living traditions of the region, combining devotion, music, gastronomy and landscape in the same setting. Thus, Mount Madalena is not only an exceptional viewpoint, but also a space that intertwines nature, history and local culture, offering tourists a complete and memorable experience of inland Galicia.
