Ponte Gomail Bridge

Category Historic bridge

Ponte Gomail is a medieval bridge dating from the 15th century, built using a combination of slate rubble masonry and granite ashlar, materials commonly found in traditional Galician architecture. It is a sober and functional stonework structure, adapted to the river environment and to the transport needs of the period. Although it preserves its medieval layout, the bridge underwent renovations in the 18th century, which ensured its consolidation and continued use as a crossing point.

From an architectural point of view, the bridge has a simple and robust structure formed by three arches. The main arch, slightly pointed, rests directly on the riverbed. With a height of about five metres, it allowed water to pass freely even during periods of flooding. To its right there is a cutwater shaped like a ship’s keel, designed to protect the structure from the force of the current, followed by two smaller semicircular arches, which complete the structure and reinforce its stability.

Historically, Ponte Gomail formed part of an important communication route between the higher areas of the present-day municipality and the Ribeiro region, also connecting territories such as A Estrada and Moraña. Today, its role as a commercial and transit route links it to the itinerary of the Camiño da Geira e dos Arrieiros, which leads toward Santiago de Compostela. The bridge therefore stands out as a valuable heritage element and as a testimony to the historic routes of communication and trade that structured inland Galicia during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period.

Today, this bridge preserves the essence of the ancient paths that for centuries connected the regions and territories of inland Galicia.
