Aguas Ganadas Mausoleum

Aldea A Penela
Category Monument

The Aguas Ganadas Mausoleum is a singular structure located in the village of A Penela, along the Winter Way of the Camino de Santiago that connects Rodeiro and Lalín. The construction was promoted by Ismael Calvo Gutiérrez, who was involved in a local dispute over the use of nearby river channels. He decided to build this mausoleum during his lifetime as a reminder of the legal process that granted him rights to the use of water resources in the area.

The structure has become a curiosity along the pilgrimage route, known among hikers and pilgrims who follow the Winter Way from Rodeiro towards Lalín. The aesthetic and cultural value of the monument is diverse, and it is generally interpreted as an example of contemporary popular art rather than as a historical heritage element.

Located next to the traditional passage used by pilgrims in A Penela, it has become an anecdotal point of interest along the Winter Way, notable for its singular character and for the personal story it reflects in connection with traditional conflicts over water in rural Galicia. Although its origin and meaning may be open to debate, its presence reminds visitors that individual stories also form part of the landscape and the memory of the region’s historic paths.
