The Church of Santa María de Basadre, located in the rural surroundings of the municipality of Agolada, is a representative example of Galician parish religious architecture. It has a Latin cross plan with a square apse and a sacristy attached to one of its sides. The building is constructed with granite masonry and ashlar stone, traditional materials that give it solidity and a sober appearance. It is covered with tiled roofs with two and four slopes, adapted to the different heights of its volumes.
Inside, the organisation of the space is clearly visible. Both the side chapels and the presbytery are located at a slightly higher level than the nave, visually reinforcing the sacred character of the altar area. This spatial arrangement guides the visitor toward the chancel of the church and emphasises the centrality of the liturgical space.
The main façade has a simple composition, with a lintelled doorway above which there is a lintelled window and a clock, elements that vertically structure the front of the building. Crowning the ensemble is a large bell gable, which acts as the church’s belfry and visual culmination, topped by a Cross of Saint James, a symbol deeply rooted in the religious and cultural tradition of Galicia.
Overall, the Church of Santa María de Basadre represents a characteristic example of Galician rural religious architecture, where the simplicity of forms is combined with a spatial organisation designed for liturgy and traditional parish life.
