Church of San Miguel de Duxame

San Miguel, Duxame
Category Church

The Church of San Miguel de Duxame, located in the parish of the same name in the municipality of Vila de Cruces, is an elegant example of 18th-century Galician rural religious architecture. The church has a Greek cross plan, a feature that is unusual in the area, with a single nave and two apses, giving it remarkable balance and spatial harmony.

The main façade, facing west, is distinguished by its entrance with toric archivolts in a slightly pointed semicircular arch, a decorative element typical of Gothic art. Inside, the triumphal arch leading to the presbytery repeats the same slightly pointed form and is covered by a barrel vault that reinforces the sense of depth. These simple but well-proportioned architectural details give the building a notable structural elegance.

One of the most distinctive elements of the complex is its tower-shaped bell tower, composed of three sections, topped by a dome. The openings in the upper section allow the sound of the bells to pass through, which traditionally marked the rhythm of parish life. Overall, the Church of San Miguel de Duxame is a fine example of Galician rural religious architecture of the period, where simplicity of form is combined with careful ornamentation and a strong spiritual character.
