Castro de Toiriz Hillfort

Os Castros, Toiriz
Category Castro (archaeological site)

The Castro of Toiriz Hillfort is an ancient fortified settlement dating from the Second Iron Age, probably built around the 4th century BC. Its defensive structure is still preserved today, with deep ditches and parapets that once protected its inhabitants. The hillfort is organised into two walled areas: the first, circular in shape, is located on the northern part of the hill and is known as Eira dos Mouros, while the second occupies the lower level and is arranged parallel to the ditch-and-parapet defensive system. The site not only holds significant historical and archaeological value, but also helps to understand the defensive strategies and settlement organisation of Iron Age hillfort communities. The arrangement of the walls and ditches demonstrates the importance of protection against possible attacks, as well as the settlement’s adaptation to the natural relief of the terrain, making use of both elevated areas and lower ground for its development. In addition to its heritage value, the Castro of Toiriz Hillfort is surrounded by an aura of mystery, reinforced by numerous local legends associated with the site. These stories, passed down from generation to generation, contribute to the symbolic character of the hillfort, where history, landscape and tradition intertwine in one of the most evocative sites in the region.
